Over a month!

October 8th, 2006

Woohoo!

My little blog is over a month old this week!

It’s been fun exploring the bounds of keeping a public journal…

what can I say… but won’t?
what can’t I say… but will?

One of the great things about my site is that it’s got me writing again. Writing is a great way to get the creative juices flowing and practice critical thinking.

Here’s to a good start and a long, fun future of seanhill.ca!

The benefit of discipline

October 8th, 2006

I’ve had various struggles with discipline throughout my life. I wrote before about keeping focus, putting things off, and getting enough sleep.

Discipline requires dedication and decision making. Dedication is necessary for maintaining effort during adversity, and decision making is needed to ensure there is no stalling because of uncertainty. Both dedication and decision making demand a certain degree of belief in why the goal is worth striving for in the first place.

And so we come to meditation.

Down to the wire…

September 30th, 2006

I used to be a terrible procrastinator. Any excuse to not do something today was good enough, though the excuse was usually TV or some variant of screen watching. I would push aside most things that weren’t an immediate need until the last minute.

Anything with a deadline resulted in a flurry of rushed work. Essays that were started in the evening were finished just before I walked out the door to school in the morning. Personal projects were left undone. Cleaning simply wasn’t done (because who likes cleaning?).

Focus

September 18th, 2006

There’s a funny thing about getting things done… you need to stay focused to do it.

That’s not to say that one who isn’t focused won’t accomplish anything, just that they’re unlikely to have much control over what they get in the end.

Sciatica

September 10th, 2006

According to the wikipedia:

Sciatica is a pain in the leg due to irritation of the sciatic nerve.

While it is just the start of their article, it’s an incredible understatement.

For a few months now I’ve kind of ignored a relatively small pain that’s been making noises in my leg. At first it bothered me, but then since it didn’t get any worse and only appeared with occasional, awkward movements, I mostly forgot about it.

Well forget no more! About a week ago the pain started to grow and show up more and more frequently. Now for the last 2-3 days I have been properly hobbled by pain… and humbled by the results of not taking care of myself properly.

Where once I had to really stretch and twist to find the pain, now I just have to sit down… stand up… walk…

Treatment has begun with gentle yoga and some massage, and this week I may just make my second rarest of visits… a trip to the doctor!

A tale of caution! Ignore not the tingling, small pains that warn of growing trauma!

Sleep

September 6th, 2006

It really is amazing how much time can be sunk into into a website without seeing a whole lot change on the surface.

One week ago I was a mild-mannered internet user, whose biggest presence on the internet was a bunch of webmail accounts at different services. Now I find myself with my own domain. An integrated part of the network. A node.

How to blog…

September 1st, 2006

And so I find myself entering the wild, wicked world of self-publishing a little later than I expected. I am a long-time advanced computer user with a keen interest in the diy aspect of the internet, but to this point have been mostly a casual observer of all things web.

No more!

I envision this blog running the gamut of personal observation:

interesting events and people, strange and new experiences, thoughts, and ideas, all with an odd and sometimes inappropriately-timed sense of humour.

Basically, an outward expression of the long-running story inside my head, but with rss feeds.

I look forward to connecting with and learning about all you cool folks out there in interwebland. You with your own whacky, unpredictable, fascinating minds. In this sense, my blog is an invitation to meet you. So comment, communicate, share, and let’s make the world go round.

Finally, this blog is a test of my ability to commit to diarizing and sharing what I see and hear with the rest of the world. I suppose at first nobody really knows how they’ll react to placing themselves and their ideas at the mercy of so many others all at once.

Only one way to find out!
